Great!

The next step is to swab the inside of your cheeks. Show this confirmation to a member of the Tobiasregistret staff and we’ll help you with this step of the process.

Thank you for your willingness to save lives.

Thank you for registering!

You are now one step closer to hopefully saving lives. To be a match, you need to swab the inside of your cheeks. It’s easy, and you can do it at home.

What happens next?

  1. A letter with two cotton swabs will soon be sent to the address you just provided.
  2. Follow the instructions to swab the inside of your cheeks, then place the swabs in the return envelope.
  3. Drop the envelope in a mailbox—it already has a stamp and the correct address. That’s it!

For Those Aged 16–17

You can sign up for Tobiasregistret from the age of 16, but you cannot be considered to donate until your 18th birthday. This is because, by law, you are not allowed to donate to someone you are not related to before the age of 18.

Unfortunately, you must be at least 16 years old to join the registry.

Set a reminder now for your 16th birthday — we’d love to welcome you then!

Thank you for your interest!

Unfortunately, the age limit is 35, as younger donors improve patient outcomes.

While you may not be able to register, you can still help by spreading the word, volunteering, or making a donation.

Unfortunately, your BMI (Body Mass Index) is either too low or too high to become a stem cell donor.

Being under- or overweight can, unfortunately, create complications during donation. You must also weigh at least 50 kg to provide enough stem cells.

We understand that BMI does not tell the whole story about a person’s health. Thank you for your understanding.

To join Tobiasregistret, you must live in Sweden.

If you reside elsewhere, you can find your country’s stem cell registry here—there are over 100 worldwide!

Temporary illnesses such as a cold or stomach bug are no obstacle to joining Tobiasregistret. Medication for allergies, acne, depression and ADHD is also not an obstacle to joining. Neither are hormone supplements in connection with gender correction.

However, there are a couple of other illnesses that make it impossible to join. The basic principle is that you should be healthy. If you are on long-term sick leave or go for regular medical check-ups, you should not register.

The following diseases constitute an obstacle to registration:

  • Autoimmune diseases that require treatment and control, such as Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, Fibromyalgia, MS, Severe psoriasis, Sjögren's syndrome, Addison's disease
  • Blood disease
  • Cancer (ongoing or previous diagnosis)
  • Cardiovascular disease or previous heart surgery
  • COPD/emphysema
  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Diabetes (if requiring insulin)
  • Epilepsy (if not seizure-free in the last 12 months without medication)
  • Haemophilia or other bleeding disorder
  • Previously transplanted
  • Pulmonary embolism or other tendency to thrombosis
  • Severe allergy to e.g. latex or anesthetics
  • Tested positive for HIV, Hepatitis B or C or HTLV
  • Thalassemia or sickle cell disease

Thank you for your willingness to help!

However, for both your safety and the patient’s, only fully healthy individuals can register as donors.
